Abstract

The proposed metric system has undergone changes since the ASCE Board first gave it its blessing. Considerable confusion exists regarding mass, force and weight. The history of the United States customary pound-force units denotes that the metric system (SI), in its present form, will not receive the consent of those governed. A new concept, the newton-mass, is presented; it saves the good features of SI. The newton-mass is defined as that mass which weighs one newton at standard gravity (=1/9.806 650kg). This newton standard refinement will reduce confusion and help preserve languages.
