Construction/Engineering Management: A Comparison

Publication: Issues in Engineering: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 106, Issue 4

Abstract

Management of engineering design projects is quite different from management of construction, yet both use the same project management concepts and techniques. Those project managers doing construction management (CM), Project Management Services, design/build, and turnkey are, in fact, managing both design and construction. Further study and understanding of these common concepts and techniques will benefit all project managers. The functions of project management are those of general management. They can be summarized as: Plan, Action, and Feedback. To fulfill these functions, the project manager should be aware of certain basic concepts. The most important of these are: (1)Set project objectives; (2)delegate responsibility for meeting objectives and verifying results; and (3)evaluate the results. Techniques are tools to implement concepts. CPM/PERT scheduling, cost and scope management, project monitoring, and reporting techniques are but some of the techniques.
