Abstract

The public benefits and personal intrinsic rewards would be large if more engineers were candidates for and elected to public office. With discussion related to his experience leading to and during elected office, the writer recommends five steps to elected office: (1)Budget some of your time for public service (2)write and speak your views to your elected officials: (3)volunteer for appointment to public boards or commissions: (4)volunteer to help good candidates get elected: and (5)be willing to be a candidate for elected office. The writer also recommends five principals for elected officials: (1)Diligently uphold your constitution and laws: (2)get up the learning curve before making decisions: (3)assure fairness and equity and avoid any form of favoritism or prejudice: (4)guard not only the factual principles, but also the appearances of justice and integrity: and (5)give your first allegiance to the public you service.
