Relicensure Requirements and Board Re-Evaluation
Publication: Issues in Engineering: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 105, Issue 1
Abstract
Recent legislation at the state level, responding to public pressures against growing bureaucracy and concerns over continued professional development, has made it essential that professional engineers and engineering societies actively evaluate the status of professional registration and work responsively toward its improvement. It is necessary at this time to demonstrate the value of registration laws and boards to the public. The objectives of professional engineering registration are presented, questions relating to the laws and registration requirements are raised, and two immediate concerns—sunset laws and continuing professional development—are discussed, in the context of the profession's responsibility to act constructively.
