Engineering Standards in Developing Economies

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 104, Issue 4

Abstract

Standards of safety, amenity, and quality in engineering work should be set at such a level that they are optimal for the economy in which they apply. Since the level of expectations of people varies with differing cultural and economic situations there should be a corresponding variation in the standard of work that an engineer expects his client to pay for. This does not always imply inferiority, and an intelligent assessment of the appropriate standards is needed, both by regulatory bodies and by individual engineering decision-makers.
