Abstract
Professional liability exposure and resultant errors and omissions insurance costs are threatening the survival of the engineering profession. Frivolous and third-part suits are directing an engineer's attention to defense instead of creative design. A unified effort of all of the learned technical professions is required to reverse the present trend. Solutions are to be sought in political action, maintaining competency, education, professionalism, and statutory reform.
