Management Careers for Engineers

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 102, Issue 4

Abstract

The development of scientific and professional management during the past 10 years has resulted in a new career choice for the engineer. This choice is the engineering career versus the management career. One of the many definitions of management is that it is both an art and a science of getting things accomplished through people. The engineer, by his training and aptitude is well equipped to deal with the scientific part of management. The other portion of management can be developed by the engineer through study and practice. The range of industries and types of career positions available within the various industries are unlimited for the engineer. The industry chosen by an engineer for his career will probably be directly related to academic training. This academic training may be either as a civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or other type of engineering.
