Abstract

It seems that engineers always talk about computers in terms of revolution. True, the computer has made possible a new era of engineering mathematics and engineering efficiency. This era is just beginning, as the latest results of 20 yr of engineering research—in universities and high-technology industries—begin to spread throughout engineering practice. The computer has not replaced the engineer. The fact is worth noting simply because it had been predicted from time to time that the computer would do so. As a matter of fact, the failure of the computer to become an engineer has taught us something about engineering. It has helped us see just where the creative process called engineering judgement occurs.
