Abstract
This mid-term report of ASCE's President finds the Society in good health, growing despite the generally depressed state of the construction industry. Civil engineering enrollments in the colleges is growing and ASCE's effectiveness at enrolling graduates as associate members is improved. The Society has a better informed membership this year thanks to the launching of ASCE News, a midmonth tabloid supplement to Civil Engineering. The Society has a better informed leadership thanks to a newly launched service of management conferences. A better informed membership is a more active membership: 17 specialty conferences this year, 17 continuing education courses scheduled in conjunction with next fall's Philadelphia Convention. Further, ASCE will run an August conference on productivity in the construction processes. The Society has been speaking out on national issues: situs picketing, national water policy, solid wastes management, and the need to strengthen national policies relating to construction, the industry most civil engineers serve.
