Civil Engineering Management – Prerequisites and Objectives

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 101, Issue 1

Abstract

Engineering management is of vital concern to all in the engineering profession. Those in engineering management, particularly in the upper management level, have the responsibility to instruct and assist the younger and less experienced members of our profession to rise in the ranks and be ready to assume their management responsibilities. There is no other course until our engineering schools have evolved sufficiently to meet the management demands on today's engineer. The civil engineer, who historically is the project manager, has this role thrust upon him as his heritage and because his discipline is the one most suited to carry the mantle of authority. Therefore, he must learn to handle people, to cross engineering disciplines, interface with government, public, and other professions; and he must be able to plan the orderly shift of emphasis in modes of living as society adapts more and more to group living. The civil engineer must be the technological planner and manager in a society dominated by technology.
