Industrial Archaeology—An Avocation for Engineers

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 99, Issue 4

Abstract

Civil engineers can play an important role in industrial archaeology through the use of engineering skills and insights. The recent awareness of the interrelationship of technology and society has created a new interest in the history of engineering and given rise to the new field of industrial archaeology, which through detailed investigations of industrial remains seeks to provide building blocks for the professional historian of technology. The importance of engineering techniques necessary for site recording and interpretation is emphasized. Typical examples of recent projects together with a selected bibliography and industrial archaeology recording forms are presented.
