Abstract

The strengthening of the professional status of the engineer and the registration of qualified members of the engineering profession are inseparable objectives of all engineers who wish to contribute to their profession. Work toward these objectives by educational institutions, engineering societies, and state examining boards should be accelerated. Registration laws should be updated, particularly with respect to the qualifications for registration. Licensing laws of the various states should provide that the first professional degree in engineering become a mandatory requirement for registration. The EIT phase of professional development should be eliminated. State laws should be made uniform in that engineers are licensed as Registered Engineers rather than by classification. A system of universal comity should be established.
