Abstract

The study of history affords a basis for perspective as to where we have been. A contemplation of immediate past events—such as in this review of the broad field of engineering in the year 1972—provides added insight into where we are going, since these events are helping to shape the course of engineering in the future. At present, major trends include the influence of tall buildings on urban planning and development, environmental quality and pollution control, ocean engineering, radio astronomy, and others.
