Minority Programs for ASCE

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 98, Issue 3

Abstract

ASCE has established a Committee on Minority Programs (COMP), in its Professional Activities Division. This results from local activities around minority employment and discussions about our ethical obligations toward solution of minority problems. It is proposed that, through COMP, ASCE foster activities along three lines: sponsoring education and training for paraprofessionals; development of an affirmative action plan for employment; and, offering professional expertise to community organizations involved in solution of inner-city problems. Activities should be local and national; necessary funding should be sought. Cooper proposes what ASCE might do along the lines stated. Milhollin says that ASCE can do these things if there is uneqivocal committment; they should be done in cooperation with other societies. Sinclair believes that a professional society must dedicate itself to the larger social objectives of our time. An appendix includes presentations from the November, 1971 Engineer/Architect conference on On-the-Job Training Programs.
