Abstract
Major environmental factors involved in planning coastal flood barrier systems along the Texas coast are presented in this paper. The intent is to illuminate important environmental aspects to be considered in the planning of a protective system. This paper is not a treatise on the complexities of design and construction of such a system. For this paper environmental aspects are categorized: (1) ecological—man's habitat; (2) cultural—man's heritage; and (3)) esthetic—man's sensory perception of the environment.
