Deltaic Activity of Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System
Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 99, Issue 1
Abstract
The Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system, in the Indo-Gangetic delta, is in a state of progressive deterioration. Geological evidence confirms the gradual shift in the river course of the Ganga, resulting in reduction in both quantum and duration of the upland discharge in the Bhagirathi-Hooghly. Due to the imbalance created between the tides and the upland discharge, this major river system in the delta in the West Bengal State, India, is fast silting up. Salinity is progressing inland. The Bhagirathi-Hooghly delta is turning destructive.
