Design Versus Ecology in St. Johns and Indian Rivers

Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 98, Issue 4

Abstract

Engineering design can recognize environmental values of nature and minimize losses. The construction of a system of navigable waterways in the Upper St. John River and Indian River is a threat to environmental values. Coordination of the design and environmental professionals' goals minimizes the potential losses. Alinements are located outside of the old river channel, spoil is placed on banks or uplands and structures are used to maintain flows in the existing river channel to protect fish spawning areas.
