Replacement-Locks and Dam No. 26: Plans Considered

Publication: Journal of the Waterways, Harbors and Coastal Engineering Division
Volume 96, Issue 1

Abstract

The existing Lock and Dam No. 26 on the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois has reached its practical capacity and has had a history of settlement and foundation problems to the extent that the integrity of the structure is questionable. Several alternate plans of replacement were considered including dam rehabilitation and lock replacement in the existing location, and complete replacement of both locks and dam at sites both upstream and downstream. Special studies of lock arrangement considering the views of two boat pilots are described. Other studies including a water model test and a cost comparison by a construction consultant are described. The selected plan and some of its unusual features are presented.
