Study of Microtunneling Machine Selection under Geological Risk

Publication: ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part A: Civil Engineering
Volume 10, Issue 4

Abstract

The microtunneling machine, also known as MTBM, is widely used in trenchless projects for pipeline installation. Many uncertain factors affect MTBM productivity and cost, with geological variation along the tunnel line being the main influencing factor. This study focuses on developing a risk model for estimating the total construction cost of MTBM under geological risk. The proposed approach combines a multivariate mixture distribution and numerical simulation to estimate the total cost distribution of microtunneling projects under geological risk. A real microtunneling construction project in Taipei, Taiwan, is used for model validation and discussion.
