Initial Pore Pressure from Vertical Surface Loads
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 108, Issue 9
Abstract
In estimating the initial settlement of footings supported on saturated clay soils, it is necessary to evaluate the instantaneous excess pore pressure developed in the soil upon application of the load. In this study, an explicit formula is derived for the instantaneous excess pore pressure beneath a corner of a uniformly loaded rectangular area. The pressure at an arbitrary point within the soil, then, is obtained by simple superposition of the basic result.
