Permeability and Consolidation of Normally Consolidated Soils

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 108, Issue 6

Abstract

This paper first presents a unique relationship between permeability and void ratio. This relationship is then used for deriving the governing differential equation of consolidation for normally consolidated soils where void ratio vs. logarithm of effective stress can be approximated by a straight line. The derivation shows that the coefficient of consolidation can be related directly to the applied effective stress.
