Liquefaction Potential of Hydraulic Fills

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 11

Abstract

The potential for future earthquake-induced liquefaction in the hydraulic fills of this important harbor area are examined with the aid of several recently proposed detailed and simplified procedures. In addition, the validity of these procedures is assessed by applying them in liquefaction analysis of the hydraulic fills existing in the harbor during the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake. The study suggests there is something less than a 50% chance of liquefaction occurring during the useful lifetime of these facilities. The consequences of liquefaction will depend on the nature of land use at the time.
