Stability Charts for Sidehill Fills
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 5
Abstract
In a previous paper, the writer presented tables of stability coefficients for determining approximately the factor of safety of sidehill benches as well as embankments on a horizontal ground surface. The soil in the bench or embankment may have a cohesion and an angle of internal friction quite different from those in the natural ground. In the special case where the bench or embankment lies directly on a stiff stratum or bedrock, stability chars were presented to facilitate computations. These charts are applicable only when the stiff stratum is either inclined, as in the case of a sidehill bench, or horizontal as in the case of an embankment. For the case of the sidehill fills in which the bench or embankment is placed on a horizontal ground at one side and a hillside at the other, no stability charts are currently available. The purpose herein is to present such charts, which can be used for determining the factor of safety of sidehill fills, as have been built frequently for the expansion of usable sites or the disposal of solid waste materials.
