Abstract

A survey of knowledgeable engineers from around the world was conducted to obtain opinions on possible future advances in soil placement and improvement technologies. Twenty-nine carefully selected engineers from 11 countries participated. Their initial suggestions were combined into 41 possible future developments and returned to the participants for evaluation with respect to present capability, desirability, and feasibility; and estimation of time to development. The suggested developments and the evaluations are presented and discussed. Advances in the area of soil improvement and placement will be rapid and varied in the next fifty years. Suggested developments are included in the areas of soil densification, admixture stabilization, reinforcement, moisture control, grouting, and others.
