Abstract

Practicing engineers are well aware that many of the problems they encounter involve unsaturated soils. The construction of earthfill dams, highways, and airport runways all use compacted soils that are unsaturated. Also, large portions of the earth's land surface are subjected to desiccating influences that leave the upper portion of the profile cracked and unsaturated.
