Finite Element Analysis of Piles in Expansive Media

Abstract

A two-dimensional finite element model was developed to simulate piles in expansive media. Both flow and elastic behavior were assumed linear, and environmental effects were represented by a sinusidal moisture flux function. Volume changes of the soil caused all piles to move, but displacements were smaller for deeper piles and piles with heads laterally-fixed. Bells and isolation sleeves showed only a minor effect, while impervious peripheral membranes, beneficial for shallow footings, may increase the displacements of piles.
