Abstract
Ten series of undrained tests, each involving 13 tests with 13 stress paths and seven inclinations of the principal stresses, were conducted on four different one dimensionally consolidated clays. The results lead to the conclusions that there does not exist a unique relationship between water content and effective stress during shear, and that the cross anisotropy resulting from one-dimensional consolidation cannot be overlooked when studying the strength of such clays. The standard Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is shown to be inadequate in expressing the strength of the tested clays.
