Scale Effect for Shallow Footings on Dense Sand

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 100, Issue 1

Abstract

Scale effect has been observed in many materials such as concrete, ceramics, or rocks. It is usually accompanied by a scattering of results and its origin is generally ascribed to heterogeneity: the major defects of the material are that much bigger when the volume considered is large. The writer will show that the lack of homogeneity of the granular medium caused by an isolated slip line explains the scale effect in a dense sand mass. Observations are presented which make it possible to situate and interpret the scale effects obtained with dense sand when the stress field is not homogeneous, especially in the presence of gravity.
