Abstract
The bus depot is an indispensable infrastructure of a transit system. Location selection of bus depots has significant influence on operational costs. The primary purpose of this study is to optimize the assignment of buses to depots considering the dead kilometers between the first bus stations and the depots. A mixed-integer program (MIP) formulation was proposed to reduce the total dead kilometers, optimize the assignment of buses to depots and determine the priority construction of parking depots and maintenance depots. A case study in Xi’an was given based on above model to optimize the location of depots. Results show that the optimization model can effectively reduce dead kilometers by optimizing the assignment of buses to depots, and can help to determine the priority construction of the depots.
