Abstract
Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a sustainable urban development strategy to create an efficient integration of land use and public transit. For the land development of the urban rail transit central station area, this study proposes a multi-objective programming model based on the TOD concept. In this study, one central urban rail transit station in Xuchang in China was taken as the case. Four objectives were taken into account during the modeling process: maximizing urban rail transit system ridership, enhancing living-environment quality, making land use as compact as possible, and improving land use mix. Meanwhile, an improved genetic algorithm was designed to obtain the optimal solutions under alternative land use schemes. The research results showed that the model would be efficient in practice, achieving high-intensity and compact development of the land. This study is hoped to provide development ideas for urban planning decision-makers.
