Ideal Walking Time to Transit Stops: A Comparative Analysis between Car Users and Public Transit Users

Publication: CICTP 2019

Abstract

Walking is the primary access mode to transit stops. To a certain extent, the walking time to stops determines whether a traveler uses public transit. This study focuses on the ideal walking time to transit stops and presents a comparative analysis between car users and public transit users using the data from Guiyang, China. The average ideal walking time of car users and public transit users are 5.8 and 6.5 min, respectively. The result of the Mann-Whitney U test showed significant differences between car users and public transit users’ ideal walking time. Then, the ordered logistic model was performed to explore how sociodemographic characteristics influence ideal walking time. The results demonstrate that gender, age, occupation, and annual household income have a significant impact on the ideal walking time of public transit users, while gender, age, and education level have a significant impact on the ideal walking time of car users.
