Abstract
Variable message sign (VMS) is an important tool for urban traffic information services. A good route guidance strategy can ease traffic pressure and environmental pollution effectively. This paper brings up a new dynamic route guidance strategy in order to analysis the impact of VMS information services on vehicle emission and fuel consumption, based on the macroscopic traffic flow model (METANET). The driver’s information compliance rate and the refresh cycle of the VMS are also taken into consideration. To prove the environmental benefits of this strategy, a simulation is done on a certain type of road network. The results of the simulation show that this strategy has a great impact on the environment. The annual emission of CO, HC, NOx, and fuel consumption can be reduced by the VMS dynamic route guidance strategy.
