Abstract
In this paper, we research the safety perception of pedestrian crossings under different crosswalk conditions and analyze the causes of conflicts between pedestrians and other traffic participants. We also offer suggestions on pedestrian clearance and mitigating conflicts between pedestrian and turning. The study conducted intercept surveys at crosswalks in Shanghai, where pedestrians were asked to rate their safety perception. The result is the late walkers (LW) have the worst safety perception, while green walkers (GW), and red walkers (RW) have a similarly higher safety perception. Results show that safety perception is improved with presence of a refuge island. Pedestrian clearance and turning vehicles are the most serious safety problems at intersections. We propose to use flashing red pedestrian clearance signals and the clearance time should be calculated under different conditions. Finally, we recommend several signal control strategies that may be effective in reduce the conflicts between pedestrians and turning vehicles.
