Probabilistic Tsunami Design Maps for the ASCE 7-16 Standard
Publication: ASCE 7-16 Tsunami Design Zone Maps for Selected Locations
Abstract
Prior to 2016, a national standard for engineering design for tsunami effects did not exist, and this significant risk is mostly ignored in engineering design. The ASCE 7 Tsunami Loads and Effects Subcommittee has prepared a chapter on tsunami loads and effects for the 2016 edition of Standard ASCE/SEI 7. This report describes the development of 2,500-year probabilistic tsunami design zone maps for the five Pacific states of the United States (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington) for use with the ASCE 7 design provisions. These new maps define the coastal zones where structures of importance would need to be designed for tsunami resistance and community resilience.
