Exploring the Traffic-Bearing Capacity of Road Networks Using a Newly-Defined Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram

Abstract
The traffic bearing capacity of a road network can be defined as the maximum number of vehicles that a road network can efficiently handle, which is an important basis for dynamic network management. This paper first presents a newly defined macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD), that is, the relationship between the numbers of vehicles in the network to the number of vehicles that leave the network. Second, data requirements and detector distributions will be discussed. Third, the newly defined MFD is modeled using piecewise fitting and the least squares method; additionally the method for determining traffic bearing capacity is proposed. Finally, the developed method will be tested on two networks, including a computer-generated network and a real-world road network. The results show that the proposed methods are effective for modeling the MFD and determining the traffic bearing capacity of a network.
