A Study of Defective Roadway Infrastructure Leading to Government Compensation

Abstract
The roadway is the main connection between two places, as well as the most important national infrastructure and public facility. This study looks at the problem of defective roadway infrastructure leading to government compensation from the view point of traffic engineering and traffic management. In some cases, people may lose their lives because of the improper installment of the roadway facilities, the government compensation then becomes the only way to remedy these losses. This study is being conducted in view of the severe problem of road defects causing traffic accidents. It is divided as three types: (1) summary and analysis of 14 road defects that lead to government compensation; (2) case studies on existing road defects; (3) survey of roadway users on road defects and road use satisfaction. Of the 500 issued surveys, 377 returned as valid samples, a 75.4% recovery rate. The survey showed that of the 14 commonly encountered road defects, road users thought "unevenness of man-hole covers with road" to be the most dangerous, the second being "pot holes or depressions," and the third "damage caused by construction." According to "the degree of satisfaction of road use and management," roadway users were more dissatisfied with "construction" than with "management."
