A Simple Technique for Estimating Matric Suction of Unsaturated Fine-Grained Soils Using Pocket Penetrometer
Publication: Advances in Unsaturated Soil, Geo-Hazard, and Geo-Environmental Engineering
Abstract
A series of pocket penetrometer (PP) tests were carried out to measure the compression strength of fine-grained soil (i.e., Indian Head till) specimens that were compacted with different water contents (i.e., matric suction values) and compression stresses. Based on the experimental results, a simple technique is developed to estimate matric suction of the as-compacted soil specimens using the unique relationship between the matric suction and compression strength determined from the PP tests. The proposed technique is simple, promising and can be extended towards estimating the matric suction of different types of unsaturated fine-grained soils (i.e., with different plasticity index, Ip) compacted both in the laboratory and in field conditions.
