Osterberg Cell Load Testing on Helical Piles

Abstract
Helical piles are structural, deep foundation elements used as a means to transfer the applied axial and horizontal loads, and overturning moments from the superstructure to the soil substructure, within a specified criterion. The design process is complex and incorporates various degrees of uncertainties. Closed form design solutions incorporate safety factors in order to mitigate the risk from excessive pile head displacements under the load transfer process. Load testing of the piles is the most accurate method of determining load versus displacement behavior in order to validate design assumptions and to mitigate risk. Conventional load testing of applying a load at pile head was the only method used for testing helical piles, until recently when the first bi-directional O-Cell® test was carried out on a helical pile. An O-Cell test comprises a separation of the shaft and toe behavior, as well as other results important for assessing the adequacy of the pile. Based on an actual comparison of the O-Cell test to the results of a traditional pile load test, the O-Cell method is proven cost effective, quicker, and a more accurate method of testing helical piles.
