Review of Applications of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry (FTIR) in Characterization of Construction Materials
Publication: Geo-Frontiers 2011: Advances in Geotechnical Engineering
Abstract
Full utilization of limited resources and cost effective recycling of industrial byproducts and construction materials requires fast, reliable, and inexpensive characterization of materials. FTIR is introduced as a potential analytical technique that is capable of providing useful information on quality and characterization of materials. Fundamental aspects of FTIR are discussed along with a number of its applications in construction industry. Recent developments in the manufacturing of a handheld version of FTIR that has been traditionally used in a laboratory setting are discussed. It is concluded that handheld FTIR devices can be used in materials characterization and needs minimal operator training and spectra interpretation ability. FTIR uses an IR beam as a probe that is safe to operate compared to X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy.
