Experiment Based Multiscale Computations in Granular Materials

Publication: Geo-Frontiers 2011: Advances in Geotechnical Engineering

Abstract

We will present a novel technique for bridging the micro- and macro- mechanical scales in granular materials. In particular, we will show that a hierarchical multiscale technique can be coupled with advanced experiments to predict the behavior of sands, completely bypassing phenomenological evolution laws for the macroscopic variables controlling the material behavior. It is the first time that a multiscale technique can predict the behavior of granular materials under 3D loading conditions.
