Abstract
In response to the unsatisfactory performance of some MSE retaining walls, the design and construction practices of these retaining wall systems have been reviewed. The result of this review revealed the need for a more collaborative and systematic approach to design and construction of proprietary MSE wall systems. The Geotechnical Engineer serves as a vital member of the design and construction team for MSE retaining walls. Key design and construction responsibilities of the Geotechnical Engineer and the necessary active communication and coordination within the project team to address these important MSE retaining wall related obligations are discussed.
