Evaluation of Jet Grout Formation in Soft Clay for Tunnel Excavation
Publication: Geo-Frontiers 2011: Advances in Geotechnical Engineering
Abstract
This paper presents a post-construction evaluation of jet grout column formation in soft marine clay based on data obtained from installation records of production jet grouting work. From the observed quantity of cement consumed for each column, it was estimated that column diameters achieved in situ varied between about 1.0m and 1.8m, although the mean diameters were comparable with the target design value of 1.5m. An analytical model was used to predict cutting distance of air-shrouded jets in cohesive soil. The model variables were calibrated by back-analyzing jet grouting field trial results at a nearby site in similar soil conditions. The model suggests that, for any given set of jetting parameters, variation of column diameter is significant for normally consolidated marine clays where the shear strength increases with depth. Shallow jet grouting field trials may not provide sufficient confidence that the target design column diameter can be achieved at greater depths, even if the trials indicate satisfactory performance.
