Abstract
The below grade structure of the San Antonio Convention Center Grand Hyatt Hotel was constructed using an anchored reinforced concrete diaphragm wall. The diaphragm wall is advantageous in that it can be used as the temporary shoring during the mass excavation and as the permanent wall of the below grade structure. The high rise hotel includes 36 above grade stories and five below grade stories for parking. The building was built on the site of an old garage recently demolished and immediately adjacent to the historic Lila Cockrell Theater and the San Antonio River Walk. This paper discusses the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm wall excavation support system. Many challenges unique to underground urban construction were encountered and were overcome. These challenges and how they were overcome are discussed.
