Abstract
Large tower structures are vulnerable to seismically induced failure due to the complex nature of dynamics soil-structure interaction. In this study, a group of centrifuge tests was conducted to study the influence of soil liquefaction on the dynamic soil-structure interaction and the seismic response of the tower structure. The experimental data and the interpretation are presented. In addition, an engineering countermeasure of using cement-stabilized sand in the foundation to reduce the possibility of soil liquefaction was evaluated. It was found that this countermeasure worked successfully in reducing excess pore pressure and dynamic response. Implications for design are discussed.
