Abstract
Residual shear strength of a soil mass depends on many factors such as: type of mineral, pore water chemistry, shearing rate etc. There are very few articles in literature that explain the nature of strength variation with the rate of shearing. Variation in shearing resistance of soil specimens collected from four different landslide areas triggered in mudstone formations are discussed in this paper. Residual shear strength was observed to be lower for higher shearing rates in all of the cases. This shows that even though the tests are performed at the conventional shearing rates calculated based on the consolidation data, there is a possibility of having excess pore water pressure during the shearing process.
