Abstract
In this study, the effects of an anionic surfactant on the suction-moisture relationships of kaolinite, montmorillonite and a clayey soil were investigated. The surfactant used in this study was a commercially available surfactant Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), which was used in contaminated soil treatment. The surfactant reduces the surface tension of water to less than 35 dynes/cm with a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 2.3 g/L and hence could affect the behavior of unsaturated soils. The influence of the 5 g/L of surfactant on the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) was investigated. The anionic surfactant affects the SWCC at lower moisture contents for montmorillonite and the clay soil. The anionic surfactant had minimal effect on the kaolinite SWCC relationship.
