Engineering Properties of Unstabilized Compressed Earth Blocks

Publication: Geo-Frontiers 2011: Advances in Geotechnical Engineering

Abstract

This paper discusses the influence of molding pressure, moisture content, and curing period on compressive strength and flexural strength of unstabilized compressed earth blocks. Unstabilized compressed earth blocks were cast at two different molding pressures and three moisture contents and were tested at 7 and 28 days. Results show improvement in the compressive and flexural strength of blocks with increase in molding pressure. Loss of moisture content in the blocks due to air curing plays a vital role. Compressed earth blocks with high loss of moisture show the maximum compressive and flexural strength. Blocks compressed at the highest moisture content show the greatest improvement in strength due to curing.
