Abstract
A soil variability analysis is presented in this paper. About 317 unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests (UU) were carried out on undisturbed samples from four locations in Missouri. The spatial variation of the undrained shear strength and plasticity index was described by the second-moment statistics (mean and variance). Meanwhile, the correlation between the undrained shear strength and plasticity index was established and compared with other published empirical equations. The results from the soil variability analysis provide a framework to the reliability-based design.
