Using Water Conservation and Rain Water Harvesting to Recharge Groundwater: Groundwater Protection and Cultural Understanding of Hydrogeology in Abheypur, India

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2010: Challenges of Change

Abstract

For most rural areas, rain water harvesting is typically conducted to provide potable water to house-holds or local point-of-use areas. However, in Abheypur India, rain water is also being collected to recharge the groundwater. This broad awareness to the lowering of the groundwater table demonstrates a cultural sensitivity and the need for sustainable solutions; however, if well head protection is being compromised, it also leads to potential water quality issues and does not effectively recharge the aquifer.
