Preserving Hydroelectric History in Mexico: Developing the Remate Project as an Interpretive Park
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2010: Challenges of Change
Abstract
Just over 100 years ago in 1906, the first hydroelectric station was constructed in the state of Colima, Mexico. The turbines produced over 650 kW of electricity and harnessed over 100 meters of head. Colima is a small state located on the Pacific coast of Mexico near Guadalajara. Compañía de Potencia y Luz Eléctrica de Colima, S.A. (Colima Power and Electric Light Company) under the leadership of its president, Arnoldo Vogel von der Wettern, developed the plant. This was the first electric plant in the state, and it provided service to Comala, Villa de Álvarez, and the City of Colima. In 1967, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) acquired regional electric companies including this one, and the Commission closed the hydroelectric plant. In recent years, the Colima state government has launched an ambitious historical preservation project associated with the project.
